A Letter from the Superintendent
June 9, 2008

Dear Parents and Students,

With this newsletter I want to welcome all of our new families to St. Edward High School. With the school year just completed on June 2nd, it hardly seems possible to think about next year. I hope everyone will have the opportunity to rest, relax, and vacation this summer. This newsletter should help in planning for the upcoming school year.

  1. Summer Office Hours: We will be open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until Noon. If you need to reach us at another time, please leave a message at our general mailbox. I will be out of the office from July 28th until August 6, otherwise I will be here throughout the summer at ext. 100. Please do not leave messages at any other extensions. The staff is out for most of the summer and will not be able to return your call. All staff will report after August 15th, so you may start leaving messages after that date.

  2. Summer Reading: Enclosed in the mailer is the summer reading program for English. Students must purchase the books at a local bookstore or borrow them from a public library. Summer reading needs to be completed by the start of school on August 20th.

  3. Class Schedules: Class schedules should be mailed to your home by the end of June. If the schedule is incorrect or needs to be changed, please call me (ext. 101) before the start of school. Let’s try to avoid a long line on the first day of school. Schedule changes will be accommodated wherever possible.

  4. Communication and Technology: This year, we will continue to improve on communication and technology to serve you better. The cafeteria will be using a pre-paid lunch card system called Smart Card (please see the letter included with this mailer). We have an emergency and non-emergency contact phone system in place for the parents. Ed-Line will continue to be improved and the web page will be updated with current and timely information on events. See our web page at www.stedhs.org. The school is working this summer on an updated technology plan in order to help our students prepare for the 21st century job market.

  5. Dress Code: The school uniform code will not change for the 2008-2009 school year. The Parent Club has started a Uniform Exchange Program. Educational Outfitters will be our uniform store again this year. See the flyers concerning uniforms in the mailer.

  6. Parent Meetings: The parent meetings for the start of school are set. Freshmen & new Parents will meet on Tuesday, August 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Gym. Returning parents will meet on Wednesday, August 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Gym. The Fall Sports meeting will be on August 4th at 7:00 p.m. For those needing to return sports forms, collection starts at 6:30 p.m. All student athletes must have a sports physical before they can participate in practice. For Freshmen, the 9th grade school physical meets this requirement, however for upperclassmen, a current sports physical is required.

  7. Fee Payment Days: Enclosed you will find the fee schedule for the 2008-2009 school year. Our fee payment days will be held on August 4th from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and August 5th from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

  8. Physicals, Social Security Numbers, Birth Certificates: In compliance with State of Illinois law, children must receive a physical examination prior to entering the ninth grade. Children who have not received a physical examination, as required, are considered to be in non-compliance whether or not they have received the required immunizations and may be excluded from school. All shots, including baby shots, should be listed on this form. It is important to note the day, month, and year for all immunizations must be completely filled in by a parent or doctor's office nurse.

The 9th grade physical, social security number, and a copy of the birth certificate are due on or before Freshmen Orientation Day in August for incoming freshmen. Please note that any all-sports physical that your student took does not meet the 9th grade physical requirements. It is recommended that parents keep a copy of the 9th grade physical with immunizations in the home file.

  9. School Newsletter: The school newsletter will be sent this year on or about September 1st, November 15th, February 1st, and April 15th. If you wish to receive the newsletter on-line, please fill out and return the enclosed form. This saves on school postage and all forms may be downloaded. Groups wishing to have flyers approved for the newsletter must have them to Fr. Edward one week prior to the above dates.

I hope you have a restful and enjoyable summer. Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns you may have. I pray for you and your family daily and I hope that you will pray for our continued success. I truly believe that St. Edward is the place “Where friendship begins”. May our friendships be forever cemented by our love of God and the care of our children.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Edward
